Matt Gillespie

creative partner + brand art director

What was your path to dfine?

My path to dfine started with entering the graphic design industry in 2001. I began working with Danna for the first time in 2003 and we have worked together through different channels since then. After working with a couple different companies and for myself for many years, Danna came to me with a vision for a new company that seemed to be a perfect way to continue supporting my clients in more ways than I was able to on my own.

How do you “dfine” branding and what it means to you?

Branding to me is the continual effort to create a concept that conveys a message that resonates with the viewer in a way that they cannot forget. It starts with research and then a great idea, but sometimes requires a little luck to take it to the next level. A brand is the impression that a company leaves a customer with, no different than the traditional method of using a branding iron.

What is your favorite brand and why?

As cliché as this sounds, I have to say Apple. No other brand gives me the excitement that Apple does. Whether it’s watching a keynote unveiling new products or unwrapping the perfectly packaged item you just purchased, it’s like Christmas morning as a child. Magical.

What is it you are happiest doing?

I love being able to spend time with my wife, two daughters and friends. I am happiest when I am in my backyard working in the garden. Gardening has become a passion of mine over the past few years. A perfect day involves working in the yard for hours and then admiring what you’ve done while sipping a beer and barbecuing with friends while the kids play.
